Martin Garbus’ landmark defense of comedian Lenny Bruce was brought to the Off-Broadway stage in the world premiere of The People Versus Lenny Bruce, written by Susan Charlotte and presented by Cause Célèbre Productions at Theatre Row. The production chronicles the historic obscenity trial that became a defining First Amendment case and highlights Mr. Garbus’ efforts to defend not only his client, but the principles of free expression.
Stephen Schnetzer portrayed Martin Garbus, alongside a distinguished cast led by Johnny Anthony as Lenny Bruce. Mr. Garbus also participated in a special post-performance discussion examining the case’s enduring relevance and the continuing importance of protecting First Amendment rights.
The production underscored how the issues raised during the 1964 trial remain strikingly relevant today, reinforcing the lasting impact of one of the most significant free speech cases in American legal history.
